What sustainability really means in modern vending: How The Jar Healthy Vending is leading the way

Sustainability is no longer an optional consideration for London businesses. Rising temperatures, more frequent periods of extreme heat and growing pressure to reduce emissions are influencing how organisations operate their food and beverage offering, what they buy and which suppliers they choose.
The impacts of climate change is particularly visible in London. So far, this summer in London has been one of the hottest on record. In late May, a temperature of 35.1°C was recorded in west London, breaking the UK’s previous temperature record. More widely, 2025 was the warmest year recorded in the UK series dating back to 1884, with the most recent decade 1.33°C warmer than 1961–1990 (Met Office, 2026).
Against this backdrop, sustainability is becoming an important consideration across almost every industry and vending is no exception. Clients are increasingly looking beyond the price of a machine or the products stocked inside it. They also want to understand how much energy the equipment uses, how often it is serviced, what vehicles are used for deliveries, how waste is controlled and whether environmental claims are supported with eveidence.
At The Jar Healthy Vending, we believe real progress comes from practical changes across the whole service: the machines, delivery fleet, stock-management systems, products, packaging and everyday business operations. This article explores the history of sustainability in vending and how The Jar is leading the way in sustainability practices.
Has vending historically been sustainable?
Vending was originally designed around convenience, reliability and 24/7 access. Sustainability was rarely a central consideration. Older machines tend to be less energy efficient, relying on outdated lighting, refrigeration systems and components. Operators also had limited visibility over what was happening inside each machine. Without live stock and sales information, replenishment was often based on set routes and schedules rather than actual demand. Traditional vending practices have therefore commonly included:
older, less efficient equipment operating continuously
petrol or diesel delivery vehicles
limited visibility over sales, stock and expiry dates
fixed rather than demand-led restocking schedules
unnecessary site visits and emergency call-outs
However, this does not mean that vending is inherently unsustainable. A single machine can serve a large number of people from a relatively small space, without the staffing, lighting and wider infrastructure required by a conventional shop or café which of course has it's benefits.
The environmental impact therefore depends less on the existence of vending itself and more on the machine, the products inside it and the operating model behind it. Historically, that operating model was built mainly around convenience. Today, it increasingly needs to balance convenience with environmental responsibility.
What has driven the shift towards more sustainable vending?
The move towards sustainability has not been caused by one factor alone. Climate concerns, net-zero commitments, energy costs, changing procurement practices, technological improvements and stronger client expectations or corproate responsibilities have all played a part.
The UK has a legally binding commitment to reach net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050. Environmental performance is also becoming more relevant within procurement. Current government policy requires suppliers bidding for certain major central-government contracts to publish a Carbon Reduction Plan and confirm their commitment to achieving net zero by 2050.
Whilst these requirements do not apply to every vending contract, they do reflect a broader shift in how suppliers are assessed. Organisations increasingly expect businesses within their supply chains to understand, measure and reduce their environmental impact.
Energy-efficiency requirements have changed too. Refrigerated vending machines fall within UK energy-labelling requirements for appliances with a direct sales function. Their labels include an energy-efficiency class and estimated annual electricity consumption, making machine performance more visible and comparable.
At the same time, telemetry, remote-monitoring and AI technology have given operators much greater control over stock, maintenance and delivery decisions. Sustainability is no longer only an aspiration; the technology now exists to support more efficient everyday operations.
What do clients now expect from a London vending supplier?
Price, product selection and reliability remain important. However, clients, particularly in London, are increasingly asking broader questions about the service behind the machine. At The Jar, we believe that a modern sustainable vending supplier should be able to explain:
the energy performance of its equipment
how machines are monitored and maintained
how stock and expiry dates are managed
how unnecessary journeys are reduced/avoided
what types of vehicles are used
how products and suppliers are selected
how packaging and food waste are considered
whether carbon and environmental claims have been independently assessed
What more sustainable vending looks like in practice
1. Machines and energy use
A vending service cannot be sustainable if the organisation's equipment is inefficient, poorly maintained or unsuitable for the site. Buying cheaper, older machines may reduce the initial investment for a client, but it can result in higher energy use, greater maintenance requirements and a shorter working life. Investing in well-built, modern equipment can improve both environmental and operational performance.
At The Jar, we're proud to purchase our machines and invest in modern, energy-efficient equipment. Our equipment is supported by remote-monitoring and telemetry systems. These systems report on:
sales
stock levels/ expiry dates
machine performance
technical issues
This allows our team to identify which machines genuinely need attention rather than visiting every site according to the same fixed timetable. The information supports demand-led replenishment, earlier fault detection, more efficient routes, fewer unnecessary call-outs and less overstocking.
Whilst technology does not automatically make vending sustainable, when used properly, it gives our operators the information needed to make better decisions.
2. Logistics and operations
The environmental impact of vending extends well beyond the machine. Machines must be installed, replenished, cleaned, maintained and sometimes repaired. When this work is carried out using petrol or diesel vehicles and inefficient routes, transport can become a significant part of the service’s footprint.
At The Jar, our delivery fleet is fully electric. This eliminates tailpipe emissions from our delivery vehicles and reduces the noise produced during urban deliveries. We also install charging points at our operators’ homes so vehicles can be charged ahead of each working day.
Our telemetry data is used to plan more efficient daily routes, prioritising the sites that require attention and reducing avoidable journeys. The combination of electric vehicles and demand-led servicing is important. Changing the vehicle alone does not solve inefficient route planning, just as improving routes alone does not remove vehicle tailpipe emissions. A lower-impact service needs to consider both.

3. Products, packaging and waste
Food waste is a significant sustainability challenge across the food and beverage sector. Within vending, the risk can be particularly high when short-life, fresh products are stocked in locations where demand is unpredictable. Fresh food can be appropriate in busy sites with consistent sales however, where footfall fluctuates, shorter shelf lives may increase the risk of products expiring before they are purchased.
At The Jar, we specialise in ambient and frozen products. This allows us to provide convenient food and drink with a lower risk of spoilage than many short-life fresh ranges. Within these categories, we prioritise recyclable packaging and work with suppliers that demonstrate responsible sourcing practices. One of our major frozen-food partners, for example, uses British meat, sustainably sourced fish and recyclable packaging across its range. We also aim to support smaller and more responsible brands where possible rather than relying solely on major multinational suppliers.
Our telemetry system provides live sales and stock information, helping us refine each range according to what actually sells at that venue. This allows us to reduce overstocking, identify slower-selling products and replenish more accurately.
4. People, partnerships and responsible business
Sustainability is not only environmental. It also includes how a business treats its employees, clients and suppliers. As a small independent business, The Jar prides itself on providing a personal and responsive service. Our clients will always speak directly to our team members, allowing us to respond quickly, adapt the service to each location and build long-term working relationships.
We are also a London Living Wage employer and aim to create a fair, positive working environment. Wherever possible, we work with suppliers and smaller brands that share our values.
These choices may not always be as immediately visible as an electric van or an energy label, but they do remain part of responsible business. Sustainability should influence how the whole company operates, not simply the claims it makes externally.

Turning sustainability commitments into measurable action
Sustainability language is now widely used, but environmental claims are most useful when they are supported by evidence. Environmental claims must be truthful, accurate, clear and supported by appropriate evidence. Businesses must also consider the claims being made across their supply chains rather than relying unquestioningly on information provided by another organisation (Competition and Markets Authority, 2021; 2026).
For The Jar, this means looking beyond isolated initiatives and considering the full impact of how we operate. Achieving Carbon Neutral status through Carbon Neutral Britain marked an important step in formally measuring our impact and taking responsibility for it.
As part of this process, The Jar has:
measured carbon emissions across its operations
reduced emissions where practical through efficient machines, smarter operations and a fully electric delivery fleet
offset the remaining measured emissions through accredited projects
reviewed products, suppliers and delivery routes to identify further opportunities for improvement
Carbon Neutral Britain’s certification process includes calculating an organisation’s carbon footprint, offsetting the measured emissions and producing a Carbon Reduction Plan focused on future reductions. The offsetting projects it supports are certified through standards including the Verified Carbon Standard, Gold Standard and United Nations Certified Emission Reductions programmes (Carbon Neutral Britain, 2026).
The Jar's commitments
Being carbon neutral does not mean that a business produces no emissions. It means calculating a defined footprint, reducing emissions wherever practical and compensating for the remaining measured impact through verified offsetting projects. Offsetting should not be treated as a replacement for direct reductions. It is a way of taking responsibility for the emissions that remain while continuing to reduce them at source.
The Jar offset its measured 2024/25 emissions through the Carbon Neutral Britain Woodland Fund, which supports independently verified environmental projects. Our assessment also gave us a clearer picture of where further action is needed. Inbound deliveries represented our largest recorded emissions area, accounting for 23% of our measured footprint.
That finding has reinforced the importance of:
consolidating supplier orders
prioritising local suppliers where practical
reducing avoidable inbound deliveries
improving delivery-route efficiency
reviewing purchasing and stock decisions
continuing to reduce emissions across the wider supply chain
Alongside our electric fleet, energy-efficient equipment and data-led restocking, we have committed to reducing our overall emissions by 50% by 2030.

Our carbon-neutral certification is an important milestone for The Jar, but it is not the end of the process. We are now working towards our 2025/26 certification while continuing to review our equipment, routes, suppliers and product range. Our aim is not to suggest that vending can ever be completely impact-free. Instead, it is to show that convenience and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand, and that a modern, London vending service can continue measuring, reducing and improving its impact each year.
